Road trips are making a comeback, and it's easy to see why. They offer a chance to slow down, explore at your own pace, and enjoy the small moments along the way. One of my favorite road trips was to Springfield, Illinois, back in 2012. With its cozy Midwestern feel and deep historical roots, Springfield turned out to be the perfect destination for a relaxing weekend drive.
Exploring the Lincoln Home National Historic Site
One of my first stops was the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, where Abraham Lincoln lived before becoming president. Walking around this beautifully preserved neighborhood, I felt as if I'd stepped right back into the 1800s. The tour of Lincoln's family home offered a personal glimpse into their daily lives, showcasing everything from original furniture to charming personal touches. It was a casual yet moving experience that sparked genuine nostalgia for simpler times.

A Visit to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum
Next up was the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. Interactive exhibits and lifelike displays brought history to life in a surprisingly personal way. I left with a deeper appreciation for Lincoln’s life—without feeling overwhelmed by information. It felt less like a history lesson and more like stepping into the past.

Exploring the Dana-Thomas House by Frank Lloyd Wright
Springfield surprised me with its architectural gem—the Dana-Thomas House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Even if architecture isn't usually your thing, there's something impressive about walking through a Wright-designed home. Everything from the furniture to the stained glass windows was carefully thought out, transporting me back to an earlier era. It was like stepping into a beautifully preserved piece of the early 1900s.

Reflecting at Lincoln’s Tomb
Finally, I visited Lincoln’s Tomb in Oak Ridge Cemetery, the resting place of Abraham Lincoln and his family. Approaching the towering monument, I felt a quiet sense of respect and reflection. Inside, the atmosphere was peaceful and respectful—perfect for contemplating Lincoln’s lasting legacy. It was one of those simple but memorable moments that made this road trip truly special.

The Illinois State Capitol & Lincoln’s Law Office
While in town, I also stopped by the Illinois State Capitol, which is just as impressive on the inside as it is from the outside. With its stunning dome and grand interior, it’s worth popping in for a free tour if you’re into architecture or politics—or even just want a cool place to stretch your legs.

Right nearby is Lincoln’s Law Office, where he practiced law before becoming president. The building has been preserved and turned into a small historic site that gives a glimpse into Lincoln's professional life. It’s a quick stop, but one that adds depth to the story you pick up throughout the rest of Springfield.

The Joy of the Journey
Of course, road trips are about more than just landmarks—they’re also about diners, roadside stops, and quiet backroads. Springfield had plenty of friendly local eateries serving classic Midwestern comfort food, perfect for winding down after a day of exploring. The slow drive through Springfield’s charming streets and surrounding countryside reminded me of what makes road trips so special—the freedom to enjoy the journey itself.
After visiting many international destinations and doing a mix of both roadtrips, camping and flying to far off places I would say that roadtrips are my favorite! Something about taking your time in getting there and enjoying the scenery.
If you’re looking for a relaxed, nostalgic getaway, Springfield, IL, offers plenty to explore, no matter how much time has passed since your last visit.
TTYL! Happy road-tripping!
