Planning a cozy mountain escape with scenic views, hiking trails, and your four-legged friend? Look no further than Blowing Rock, North Carolina, nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This charming mountain town is perfect for weekend getaways, nature adventures, and laid-back cabin vibes.
Whether you're a hiking junkie, a dog parent, or just someone who wants to unwind with a view (and maybe a flaky biscuit), here’s everything you need to know to plan an unforgettable trip.
Why Blowing Rock, NC?
So there I was, watching a random TV show and boom—I turned to Kevin and said, “Let’s go to the mountains for my birthday!” Next thing you know, we’re loading up the car and heading to Boone and Blowing Rock. Why does Kevin look like our Uber driver in every photo though?

Pro Tip: If you get carsick like I do, pack the Dramamine and wear those trendy Sea-Band Anti Nausea bands. The roads are curvy, the views are worth it, and there are overlooks galore.

Where to Stay: Sleepy Creek Cabin, Boone, NC
Nothing says “mountain magic” like a cozy cabin tucked in the woods. We stayed at Sleepy Creek Cabin in Boone—quiet, secluded, and surrounded by nature.

No distractions, just good coffee and mountain air. We found this gem in VRBO!
Day 1: Best Hiking Trails in the Blue Ridge Mountains
Blowing Rock has some of the best hiking trails in North Carolina, and they’re great for all skill levels (plus your pup). Here’s what we explored:
🥾 Blue Ridge Encampment Trail (Moderate | 5 miles)
This scenic loop links Lower Cascades Falls Trail and Tompkins Knob Trail for an incredible variety of landscapes—forest paths, open vistas, and a waterfall bonus. You can park at Hanging Rock State Park – Lower Cascades Parking Area

We let Georgia splash!

🌲 Glen Burney Falls Trail (Easy | 2.5 miles | Dog-Friendly)
If you’re traveling with a dog, this trail is a must. Georgia (our pup) approved! We hiked through lush woodlands and ended at the gorgeous Glen Burney Falls. Pro move: jerry-rig a tripod for group selfies.

Where to Eat in Blowing Rock (Dog-Friendly Dining!)
🍳 Sunny Rock - Eggs & Things
This local gem served up one of the best breakfasts in Blowing Rock. Bonus? It’s dog-friendly. Georgia chilled on the patio while we chowed down. Unfortunately this restaurant is already closed.
Must-See Attractions: The Famous Blowing Rock
Fun fact: This is North Carolina’s oldest tourist attraction! The views are postcard-worthy, and the short drive from town makes it super convenient. After your visit, hit up the Glen Burney Falls trail if you haven’t already—it’s just a few miles away.

Overall it was a good "official" hood rat day for the 3 of us and I think we got one tired pup at the end of the day

Day 2: More Trails, More Tails
🐾 Hebron Falls (Easy | 3 miles | Dog-Friendly)
Let your dog live their best life on this shady, creekside trail. Georgia splashed around like a happy maniac. Just remember to keep your pup leashed if the trail gets busy.

Let Georgia off leash if the trail is empty so she can live her best life

Breakfast Stop: Famous Toastery, Blowing Rock
Before your next hike, fuel up with a hearty breakfast at the Famous Toastery. Pet-friendly patio? Check. Happy dog waiting under the table? Double check.
Gear We Love: Portable Dog Bed for Travel
I am not sure about you but there is something wrong with having dogs wait on the floor.... no dog blanket, nothing! They deserver to be confortable too! We swear by this foldable elevated dog bed. It’s light, portable, and super convenient whether we’re camping, hiking, or brunching. Georgia approves and she patiently waited while we ate our breakfast.

Linville Falls: North Carolina’s Most Iconic Waterfall
Spurred by a picture-perfect postcard, we drove the Blue Ridge Parkway to visit Linville Falls—and it did notdisappoint. It’s one of NC’s most famous waterfalls, and the views along the drive are just as epic.
Trail Vibes:
✅ Someone offered to take our picture!
❌ Georgia blew up at another dog seconds later. Classic.

Be a traffic hazard at Blue Ridge Parkway

Bonus Trail: Jumpinoff Rock and Summit Trails
Located about 40 minutes from Blowing Rock, this moderately challenging hike leads to jaw-dropping panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Go during rhododendron season for a pop of pink and purple!
These trails are about a 40 minute drive from Blowing Rock which is definitely worth the drive because of the spectacular views

Cabin Vibes & Downtime
We ended the day pretending to watch movies but really just caught up on the internet—because, surprise surprise, cell service in the mountains is practically nonexistent. You’ll thank yourself later for the unplug.
Final Thoughts: Plan Your Blue Ridge Mountains Getaway
From dog-friendly hiking trails to charming breakfast spots and peaceful cabins, Blowing Rock, NC is one of the best Blue Ridge Mountain destinations for couples, solo travelers, and pet lovers alike.
Whether you’re looking for waterfalls, winding roads, or woodsy relaxation—this mountain escape delivers.
